On August 18th, some of our country’s top content creators and media thought leaders were invited to a special luncheon inspired by Hong Kong Cha Chaan Teng Cafes and the sunny summertime in Toronto. The occasion? Two big moments: the premiere screening of Love Matters with Grace, and the launch of the Fete Chinoise Inaugural Design Annual.
Love Matters with Grace is a brand new television show by TVB Pearl Originals led by Canadian actress and key opinion leader Grace Chan who grew up in Vancouver and now resides in Hong Kong. The production is the milestone piece to the beginning of a new chapter of original English content at Television Broadcasting Limited. Fete Chinoise is proud to be the Canadian collaboration partner for Pearl Originals.
Editor-in-Chief of Fete Chinoise Magazine Deborah Lau-Yu shared some opening remarks "... Today we are here to grow the momentum of amazing and relevant content for Asian diaspora stories, and to celebrate a brand new chapter within TVB that addresses an area of much-needed content to bridge the gap between Asian productions and Asians around the globe whose first language is English."
The room was filled with a powerful group of storytellers who have very different perspectives and each produce intriguing, entertaining and thoughtful content. Deborah highlighted the opportunity and spirit of collaboration, "This room alone has the combined power of almost 4.3 million followers and that’s incredible when you think about what this generation is capable of if we all came together intentionally to do great things that open doors that we or our parents generation of diaspora never could dream of. I hope the fabulous and fresh conversations today to seed some future surprises on your journey as a creator."
Creative Director of Pearl Originals, Thomas Lo, was the guest of honour and shared his vision for this exciting chapter of TVB. As a producer and director, he knows first hand how important it is to have relevant and diverse content to bridge the gap that many diaspora generations experience globally, and to challenge important topics and areas that have yet to be chartered through Pearl Originals. Especially with the Asian Representation movement happening around the world, it is time to harness the momentum and tell the stories that people need to see and hear, to identify with.
In addition to being the first to view the show,l guests dining at Good Catch cafe also had a chance to see the brand new cover for the Inaugural Fete Chinoise Design Annual, which was shown larger than life on all the screens.
A little bit about our Design Annual
The past two years have been full of topics on identity and representation in media at large, which is a response to Anti-Asian Racism and the evolution and maturation of generational stories of diaspora in many countries around the world, but especially in Canada. In light of this, we re-examined the role that Fete Chinoise has played in the past 8 years of pioneering a new style of storytelling for the Chinese-Canadian and global diaspora community. We have always brought forth a unique lens through art and design in everything we do (our gala, our art prints and magazines, our mooncake tins) and now it is time to carve out a specific space dedicated to the discussion, dialogue, and full indulgence in the role of Design in Chinese Culture.
Inside the Design Annual, we take you around the world to study and obsess over wonderful examples of how designers of all disciplines have inserted identity and culture in their work.
From architects, interior designers, fashion designers and stylists, to makers and creators in furniture, accessories, prints and packaging, the list of what design touches is endless and fascinating.
